I’m happy to announce the launch of Rent Day!
If you enjoy board games such as Monopoly, Rent Day tries to improve upon the basic idea and adds elements to allow different play styles. Players will have to make more strategic decisions to win and keep a close eye on their finances.
Main features
Player classes and skills
Each player must pick one of four classes that suit their playstyle – Gambler, Conductor, Governor, and Banker. Gamblers take full advantage of the new lottery games and maximize their winnings. If you love buying the train stations and traveling, the conductor is for you. Bankers minimize property taxes and the Governor takes advantage of a special property in the game – Governor’s Island.
Skills allow you to further customize your strategy by distributing points across three skills – Negotiation, Luck, and Corruption. Each point you spend on these skills gives you a small boost in some specific area of the game.
Auctions
Instead of relying on the pure chance of the dice roll. Every un-owned property must go to auction when someone lands on it. Each player bids on the property with the highest bidder winning and paying the 2nd highest bid. Bidding very carefully on properties is critical to winning the game.
Property considerations
Once you have won an auction, there are two more things to keep in mind when managing your properties – property taxes and electricity costs. These are costs you must pay every turn. Taxes are based on the purchase price and electricity on the number of houses you’ve built. Player classes and skills help you in minimizing one or both of these costs.
Tech
I may write future posts dealing with the technical side if there is interest and release the full source code. I’ve definitely learned a lot working on this. If there is anything specific you would like to read about, please mention it in the comments.
